Q: What's the difference between roof pitch and roof slope?
While both roof pitch and roof slope describe the inclination of a roof, they use different methods of expression:
Roof Pitch
Expressed as a ratio of the vertical rise to the horizontal run (half the span).
Commonly written as "X/12," where X is the number of inches the roof rises for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
Example: A 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run.
Roof Slope
Expressed as a percentage.
Calculated by dividing the vertical rise by the horizontal run and multiplying by 100.
Example: A roof with a 6/12 pitch has a slope of 50% (6/12 * 100 = 50).
